Bethesda (be-THEZ-dah), uninc. city (1990 pop. 62,936), Montgomery co., W central Md., a residential suburb of Wash., D.C. Residential area settled in the late 17th cent. by the Scottish, English, and Irish. Natl. Inst. of Health, the U.S. Naval Hosp., the Natl. Cancer Inst., the Food and Drug Administration, and the U.S. Inst. of Standards and Technology. Affiliated health care concerns and other businesses fill the large office centers which have transformd the city’s downtown.
