For Hire
(From the Yiddish.)

Rosenfeld, Morris

Morris Rosenfeld

(The poet of the East Side Jews of New York City, 1862–1923. His poems appeared in Yiddish newspapers and leaflets, and are the genuine voice of the sweat-shop workers. The following translation is Rose Pastor Stokes)

WORK with might and main,

Or with hand or heart,

Work with soul and brain,

Or with holy art,

Thread, or genius’ fire—

Make a vest, or verse—

If ’tis done for hire,

It is done the worse.
