Respectfully Quoted: A Dictionary of Quotations. 1989.

NUMBER: 2050
AUTHOR: Neville Chamberlain (1869–1940)
QUOTATION: How horrible, fantastic, incredible it is that we should be digging trenches and trying on gas masks here because of a quarrel in a far-away country between people of whom we know nothing. It seems still more impossible that a quarrel which has already been settled in principle should be the subject of war.
ATTRIBUTION: NEVILLE CHAMBERLAIN, national broadcast, London, September 27, 1938.—Chamberlain, In Search of Peace, p. 174 (1939). He was prime minister at the time.
SUBJECTS: World War II (1939–1945)
