Bartole (2 syl.).
He knows his Bartole as well as a cordelier his Dormi (French). Bartole was an Italian lawyer, born in Umbria (13131356), whose authority amongst French barristers is equal to that of Blackstone with us. The cordeliers or Franciscans were not great at preaching, and perhaps for this reason used a collection called Dormi, containing the best specimens of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. This compilation was called Dormi from the first word in the book. The compilation is anonymous.
