Sweep.
 
To sweep the threshold. To announce to all the world that the woman of the house is paramount. When the procession called “Skimmington” passed any house where the woman was dominant, each one gave the threshold a sweep with a broom or bunch of twigs. (See SKIMMINGTON.)   1
