E. Cobham Brewer 1810–1897. Dictionary of Phrase and Fable. 1898.
Son of Nudd; called the “Sparrowhawk.” He ousted the Earl of Yn’iol from his earldom, and tried to win E’nid, the earl’s daughter, but failing in this, became the evil genius of the gentle earl. Being overthrown in a tournament by Prince Geraint’, he was sent to the court of King Arthur, where his whole nature was completely changed, and “subdued to that gentleness which, when it weds with manhood, makes a man.” (Idylls of the King; Enid.)   1
