Tristrem l’Hermite or Sir Tristan l’Ermite. Provost-marshal of Louis XI. He was the main instrument in carrying into effect the nefarious schemes of his wily master, who used to call him his gossip. (1405–1493.) Sir Walter Scott introduces him in Anne of Gierstein, and again in Quentin Durward.   1
