Drinking pots at one time were made with hoops, that when two or more drank from the same tankard no one of them should take more than his share. Jack Cade promises his followers that seven half-penny loaves shall be sold for a penny;
the three-hooped pot shall have ten hoops; and I will make it felony to drink small beer. (Shakespeare: 2 Henry VI., iv. 2.)
