From Ode to Duty

William Wordsworth (1770–1850)

.. I, LOVING 1 freedom and untried,
No sport of every random gust,
Yet being to myself a guide,
Too blindly have reposed my trust …

Me this uncharter’d freedom tires;        5
I feel the weight of chance desires:
My hopes no more must change their name,
I long for a repose that ever is the same.

Note 1. Wordsworth. From Ode to Duty. 1805. Lines 25–8 and 37–40. [back]
