Bartleby.com Relaunches First Name in Quotations

Bartleby.com reinvents for 2001 the Tenth Edition of Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations, which now features a new search of 11,000 quotations and footnotes, chronologic and alphabetic indexes by author, as well as a concordance index that cross-references the quotations in over 52,000 entries.

The one-of-a-kind Bartleby.com database allows for an unprecedented array of choices for the lover of quotations: (1) a faster full-text search also allows for an easier-to-read search-results page as well as a combined search with the 9,000 entries in Simpson’s Contemporary Quotations; (2) extensive cross-referencing allows users to jump, for example, from the 1,500 Shakespeare quotations directly to the scene of their play of origin or from 670 Biblical quotations to their context in the King James Bible; and (3) hundreds of authors are linked directly from their quotations to their biographies in the most up-to-date reference resource on the Web, the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition.

The following browsing choices are available for Bartlett’s:

Chronologic Index of Authors
The primary author index encourages tracing the evolution of quotations over time via thousands of hyperlinked footnotes.

Alphabetic Index of Authors
Hundreds of authors and works are quickly accessible to all the pages on which they appear.

Concordance Index to Quotations
This browsable alphabetic index by keyword comprises over 52,000 entries.
