Running Head: IDS-100 MODULE 3 PROJECT DRAFT 1 IDS-100 Module 3 Project Draft Sara L. Fineout Southern New Hampshire University IDS-100 -Q3571 Perspectives in Liberal Arts Julia Maypole March 19, 2024
IDS-100 MODULE 3 PROJECT DRAFT 2 There are four lenses of Liberal Arts. Those lenses Humanities, History, Natural Science, and Social Science can help show you how to see things from all different perspectives that you may not have seen before. It has helped make me more open-minded and see things from the way others may see them or may have seen them in the past. The Humanities lens teaches us about the subject through the different cultures and artwork, books and philosophies. They can teach us how the different cultures see different experiences. One example of this is “If one searches the humanities from Greek and Roman times to the present, one sees an evolving field of endeavor. Indeed, our search for being human has traversed centuries. There is, however, a new emerging field of the humanities, which began as man began to explore space and orbited the earth. Donald Elder III takes us into a new realm of the humanities- and these are as he says “ the real voyages “that are reality based that allowed us to venture to the stars and change science fiction into reality. The study of man’s exploration to space is one which may become part and parcel of the humanities. Only time will tell, as women and men both continue to venture into outer space to other planets and to go where “ no man or woman has gone before” By: Shaughnessy, M. F. (2017). The Humanities: Past, Present and Future. Nova Science Publishers, Inc. The History lens shows us how the past has gone and the impacts and changes that came from historical moments throughout time. This lens can help teach us valuable lessons and show us how far we have come since then. One example of this would be this sentence from the article History. By: Kronzek, Lynn, Salem Press Encyclopedia, 2022 from the SNHU library “Public history, which involves activities outside normal academic historical studies or actions conducted by people typically not involved in academia, grew in importance in the US in the second half of the twentieth century”
IDS-100 MODULE 3 PROJECT DRAFT 3 The Natural Science lens teaches us physics, geology, chemistry and more. It shows us how to use mathematics and science to ask questions and use scientific literature and literacy skills to ask questions and find the different answers and possible answers. Using the scientific methods to find answers and learn more about our planet and world. One example of this is “Scientific literacy in adults is important for numerous reasons. A scientifically literate populace is less likely to be swayed by false information, even if that information is delivered by a charismatic leader. Additionally, scientific literacy allows voters to competently research important topics before deciding upon their opinions, leading to a more effective, well-informed electorate.” From the article Scientific literacy. By: Biscontini, Tyler, Salem Press Encyclopedia, 2022 in the SNHU library. The Social Science lens uses many different sets of academic disciplines to study the behavior of humans as members of societies such as political, economics, ethnic and geography. One example of this would be this sentence from the article Social science. By: García, Justin D., Ph.D., Salem Press Encyclopedia, 2022 “To be sure, the study of human social and cultural life that is today associated with the social sciences has been examined throughout much of human history, although not nearly in as meticulous a manner as it is investigated today. For example, whenever representatives of various colonial empires (such as the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, or Romans) ventured to new territories and encountered peoples culturally, religiously, and linguistically different from themselves, written descriptions of these foreign ways of life— representing an early form of anthropology—were created and brought back to their homes” There are many similarities between the lenses and they often work good together. You can get further information by using multiple lenses depending on your discipline.
