Handout 4 - Research Assignment “Comparing NAFTA and CETA” Similarities Differences They’re both there for the trades’ success And provided a complement to Canada’s efforts through the WTO agreements by making deeper commitments in some key areas NAFTA is more modest concerned primarily with the elimination of Tariffs compared to CETA Both CETA and NAFTA are trade agreements , but one is a free trade agreement and the other is a second generation agreement. CETA offers more far-reaching tariff elimination with 99% of lines going duty free compared to 26% under NAFTA NAFTA favors Use of Domestic Components when it comes to Rules of origin but CETA on the other hand favors use of foreign components NAFTA and CETA both work to reduce and eliminate tariffs in imports and exports between countries. NAFTA’s Nature of agreement Is multilateral and between 3 countries but CETA has a bilateral nature of agreement Advantages and disadvantages of each Advantages of CETA include lowers prices and widens choice for Canadian and European consumers, eliminates customs duties for exporters and importers, protects Canada’s innovators and artists.
Disadvantages of CETA are that CETA fails to ensure policy coherence between trade and public health, CETA is inconsistent with public health objectives regarding the prevention of alcohol induced harm and likely to increase the availability and affordability of alcohol. While CETA's adoption paves the way for the expansion of Europe's global trading relations, it represents a significant threat to public health, both in the EU and Canada. Advantages of NAFTA include lower prices of many goods, NAFTA added 0.5%, or around $80 billion, to the U.S. GDP once implemented and it strengthened the diplomatic ties between countries. Disadvantages of NAFTA are that it led to the loss of U.S. manufacturing jobs, it hurt the economic prospects of Mexican small farmers and small business owners and it suppressed wages for non-college-educated workers in the U.S 1. Do you think NAFTA or CETA is more beneficial to Canadians? (When answering keep in mind the importance of the US and the EU as trading partners and how the agreement impacts different groups: middle class citizens, large businesses, small business owners, farmers, etc.) (8 marks) I think CETA is more beneficial to Canadians. Since CETA cuts tariffs, Canada can export products easier. Exporting more and better-quality products can help Canada as a country grow because companies then will have more goods and can produce more things for our people. CETA will help people grow, it helps people get more jobs, CETA makes goods more affordable and like I’ve said before it cuts some of the expenses so that helps with making things easier for people and companies to buy. You can grow your business with CETA. It removes barriers to trade so that means you can get your products to market quicker since the border- crossing delays to EU member countries are reduced. With CETA there is going to be a boost in trades in food, animal and plant products. While the trades of food, animal and plant products are getting better and stronger, CETA makes sure to maintain high levels of human, animal and plant health and safety. CETA protects people’s rights at work and the environment as well. CETA protects Canadian innovators and artists and their rights at work by letting Canada to export high quality goods. CETA can help Canada to trade with the EU. Trading with the EU will benefit us in a couple of ways. Firstly, it helps us to have better governance by having more communication with other countries and trading with the EU countries. Trading with the EU gives us better environmental protection, stronger human rights and more health. One of the other benefits CETA has for Canadians is that it helps
