Unit 1 Written Assignment - Instructional Strategies in Education Gregory Greene University of the People EDUC 5280 November 22, 2023
Instructional Strategies in Education Ahmed's transition from a traditional work environment to one that fosters active learning poses a significant challenge, considering the adopted norms that discourage learners' engagement beyond specific limits. Being Ahmed's mentor teacher, it is critical for me to effectively guide him in understanding instructional strategies alongside their adaptation within a specified work setting. Understanding Instructional Strategies One of the essential ways I would explain an instructional strategy to Ahmed is by giving him a detailed definition and description of the term. For instance, instructional strategies refer to distinct approaches, methods, and techniques teachers use to enhance learning in a classroom setting. Students usually come from diverse social, cultural, and spiritual backgrounds. As a result of such diversity, it becomes crucial for a teacher to adopt a work mechanism that accommodates and embraces the existing diversity ( William & Marry, 2022) . In simplified terms, I would explain to Ahmed that these are strategies utilized to aid students in grasping concepts quickly. Additionally, these strategies entail structuring lessons, engaging learners, examining students' understanding, and creating a favorable learning environment. Benefits and Challenges of Active Learning Adopting active learning comes with numerous benefits, like encouraging students' participation. Encouraging students' participation in the learning process helps enhance their understanding ( William & Marry, 2022) . Similarly, students' involvement in the learning process helps assess their academic progress. The other benefit of active learning is that it encourages creating a culture of exploration ( William & Marry, 2022) . Active learning creates a favorable learning environment for students,
which creates a breeding room for innovation. Unlike in the past, technological advancements have significantly impacted modern society. Therefore, creating an innovative culture by the teachers adds value to realizing the vision of 2030. Lastly, active learning encourages critical thinking among the learners. Critical thinking is the ability to digest, synthesize, and develop an informed decision or opinion regarding a specific subject matter. Active learning aids in the creation of the virtue of critical thinking because students are subjected to learning techniques that encourage individualism, collaboration, and equality ( Mamun et al., 2020) . Through equality, all learners are accorded the same opportunity to display their opinions. Despite the several advantages of active learning, some challenges are faced. For example, implementing and encouraging active learning becomes an uphill task in a traditional setting where noise is limited and authority is exerted. Such an environment and an organizational culture suppress the gains of implementing active learning. However, the benefits of promoting active learning surpass its challenges. Ahmed's Point of Focus As the teacher begins to weigh the several available strategies, he should focus more on creating a balanced approach to the new working environment. Despite working in a different work culture, he should strive not to be inclined to approach the dilemma on one side. Such a focus would help Ahmed to be appreciative of his old work culture while at the same time acknowledging the culture of the new employer. Research shows that it is essential to respect and adhere to the cultural norms and practices of a specific work setting while gradually introducing components of active learning to the students ( Mamun et al., 2020) . Ahmed can begin with significant, structured activities that encourage a collaborative culture in the school. For
