Policy Choice Plan (30 Points) The purpose of this worksheet is to help students reflect on prior assignments, organize their thoughts, and select a specific policy to complete the upcoming Policy Brief assignment. Directions: 1. Carefully review the grading rubrics and instructor feedback you received on your 3 Policy Identification Worksheets. You should have completed a worksheet for each topic that was covered in this class. 2. Completely answer all questions below within the document: 3. Submit to the correct link in Assignments. Policy Identification Reflection (8 points): 1. What process did you use to find public health policies for the three policy identification worksheets (2 points)? In order to find relevant public health policies for my worksheets, I utilized websites like Congress.gov to identify different legislation passed in the U.S. Additionally, I referred to databases like Flgov.com to find policies that had been established at the state level. Lastly, I tried to use online articles as sources of information regarding new or recent policies and did further research from there. 2. When reflecting on all nine policies (three for each topic), which types of policies did you summarize most (highlight the appropriate answer; 2 point)? Organizational/Institutional Local State Federal 3. After reviewing all of the policies you identified, what are some similarities or differences in the implementation of these policies? For example, were some states more or less restrictive than others? Did state laws mimic federal laws (4 points)? Were most policies pro or con? After reviewing all my policies, I noticed that most of the major ones are implemented at the state or federal level. Additionally, regarding states such as Florida, I saw that their governments are much laxer with policies related to gun control and vaccinations but are more restrictive with immigration laws. Alongside this, I noticed that Florida’s legislation usually didn’t align with federal laws, and oftentimes the Florida governor would implement state policies to override and negate federal ones. All in all, the policies I identified were a good mix of pro and con, it just depended on where they were enacted. Worksheet Reflection (8 points): 4. In what areas, if any, did you lose the most points for the Policy Identification worksheets (2 points)? I did not lose any points for my worksheets. 5. Do you see any patterns in mistakes you tended to make on the Policy Worksheets? For example, did you often have difficulty in identifying implementation level or finding appropriate policies (2 points)? I did not make any mistakes on my worksheets.
6. What types of instructor feedback did you receive to improve your success on the policy identification worksheets (2 points)? I did not receive any feedback. 7. How did you incorporate this feedback into your subsequent submissions (2 points)? I did not have to incorporate feedback into any of my submissions. Policy Choice (14 points): 8. You will develop a Policy Brief focusing on one of the three topics we have received this semester. The goal of this 3 page document is to persuade a policy maker to vote in favor of or against your specific policy. Remember, you must advocate for a policy that promotes the public health perspective. Highlight the topic that will be the focus of your Policy Brief assignment (2 points): Gun Control Immigration Vaccines 9. Why did you select this topic for the policy brief (2 points)? I selected gun control for my policy brief as it not only impacts public health greatly, but it is also an issue that I feel strongly about. Gun violence and mass shootings have become normalized aspects of American society, but we need to do more to implement comprehensive gun measures. Rather than being desensitized to this issue, we must find different approaches to managing gun control that balance individual rights and public safety. 10. Consider all the feedback you have received and all the work you have put into this class so far this semester. Use this information to describe a policy that you will use for your Policy Brief assignment. a. Which specific policy will you use for your final submission? Remember, you may use one of the 9 policies you already presented in your policy identification worksheets, but you may also identify a new policy (2 points): Bipartisan Safer Communities Act b. At what level does this policy occur (2 points)? Highlight the correct answer: Organizational/Institutional Local State Federal c. Why did you select this specific policy for your policy brief (2 points) I selected this specific policy as it offers a framework for preventing firearms from falling into the wrong hands without infringing upon certain individual rights. I feel that this policy is a prime example of how we can create gun control measures that keep the well-being of the public in mind, but also allow people to still access and use firearms if they want. Ultimately, we need more policies that offer such a balance to make more progress with gun reform in the U.S.
