If there is one day I dread most upon its arrival, it would be 9/11. Sure there was an immense amount of strength as a nation represented, following the terrorists attacks, but it also brought a great amount of grief and sorrow. I remember watching videos of innocent people jumping from windows in the twin towers hoping to escape the terror. These people believed there was no one to help and no one to help them. They lost hope. An Al-Qaeda terrorist group organized this attack by sending terrorists on four different airplanes to crash into the World Trade Center in New York City, and the Pentagon in Washington D.C. On September 11,2001, disaster struck. Al-Qaeda hijacked 4 different planes. The first plane he hijacked was headed to the north tower of The World Trade Center. The second plane was headed to the south tower of The World Trade Center. The third plane was headed to the Pentagon. The fourth and final plane was headed to the White House.

In Virginia on September 11, 2001 4 planes were hijacked and 1 crashed into the pentagon and the rest crashed into the twin towers. It killed 3,000 people. More than 6,000 people were injured. No one knew this was going to happen and many people were affected.

On a quiet Tuesday morning at 8:45 September 11, 2001, a 767 was fully loaded and ready for departure. When an Islamic extremist group called Al-Qaeda, hijacked the plane and crashed into on of the World Trade Center Towers. On the 80th story of a 110 story building. Self sacrifice not only helps those directly affected, but also serves as a powerful symbol that makes a difference in the world. One man who put his life before others selflessly was Rick Rescorla. A retired US Army officer, he worked at the World Trade center as a director of security before and during the attacks of September 11th. He had always suspected that the World Trade center could be a potential target for terrorists. So, on the day of the attack, Rescorla was instrumental in helping those in the building to escape. Ignoring a PA announcement that ordered everyone to stay at their desks, Rescorla ordered everyone to escape through the staircases in a calm manner. His wife, Susan, who was watching the news at home, called him frantically.

September 11, 2001, millions of New Yorkers and American citizens woke up and started their day, unprepared and unaware for the catastrophic attack that would be taking place in just a few short hours. At 8:46 a.m., Eastern Standard Time, Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower. The impact killed all of the passengers and crew as well as hundreds inside the building. At 9:03 a.m., a second plane, Flight 175, crashed into the corner of the South Tower killing passenger, crew, and workers who worked on floors seventy-five to eighty-three. Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. killing approximately 185 individuals (History.com Staff). Because of the damaged to the support system, fires, and impact at extremely fast speed, the South Tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m. (Lipton and Glanz). Having heard about the acts of terrorism that had just taken place in New York and Washington, D.C., a group of passengers drove their plane, Flight 93, into a Pennsylvania field killing everyone on board but possibly saving hundreds of other lives in the process. The North Tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m. 102 minutes after being struck (History.com Staff). On September 11, 2001, almost twelve hundred people were wounded or killed by “coordinated suicide attempts” by Al Qaeda terrorists. In result to the four airplanes being hijacked and used for premediated reasons, the United States government instituted new regulations for entering the country and airport security as well as expounded on systems already in place.

September 11, 2001, was a very important day to some muslims, but a tragic day for the Yousafzai's. They believed that Osama bin Laden was a hero and celebrated him. While she talked about Osama Bin Laden Malala said “the Quran clearly states that it is wrong to kill” however, many people saw him as a hero because his interpretation of the Quran meant that everyone else was evil unless they were Islamic (55). However, Malala and many other muslims could not believe that a true follower of Islam would do something that horrible. They felt that God would not wish to see anyone get killed and didn’t understand how Osama bin Laden and his followers could interpret the meaning of the Quran and Islam religion so differently than they do. Heroes are those who have gone above what the average person would do to ensure the welfare of others. Natural disasters, terrorism, poverty, and war are some of the many things that destroy and end people’s lives. Throughout history, many people have made a difference. However, as history progresses, what we consider to be socially normal changes along with our definition of a hero. In Ancient Greece, Theseus, Hercules, and Perseus were considered heroes, but today only Theseus and Perseus would be considered heroes because Hercules would be shunned by society.
