English 1009 are considered an elective, a prerequisite course to English 1010. This course has a wealth of information in it. Even though it does not cover core credits, what I have learned from this course has set the stage for me to succeed in my future courses.

When I started my first semester of college, I was very worried about writing essays and research papers. I felt like my writing skills lacked greatly compared to other students. I knew a few things of which I could improve on right off the bat, such as my vocabulary skills and organizational skills. To say the least I was very nervous about how my writing composition course would be like and did not think it would go very well for me. However, I learned so many techniques that have helped my writing skills grow. It all started with learning how to stay organized, planning what to write in your essay in outline form and sticking to it really helped when writing essays. These techniques helped me become more confident in my essays and allowed writing essays to become a lot easier. The few aspects in which I am strong in while writing essays is my ability to stay organized, focused and be very clear about what I am writing. Nonetheless, there is always room for improvement; a few things that I can think of being grammar and punctuation due to no revising, embedding quotes smoothly, and citing sources correctly.
From the Journal of higher education, many lessons can be learned. One lesson being, Ms. Gussow emphasizes the importance of analyzing, assessing and reconstructing. For example, Ms. Gussow has her students create a drawing of a pea pod from memory. When they finish she brings in a real pea pod, by then the students recognize missed details. The lesson is to realize the difference from memory to reality. The students then notice that all pea pods are unlike one another. By this example, it shows the importance of observing more of the world around them. This illustration is similar to the excerpt on writing drafts. When beginning an essay some people often research and have one topic in mind. As they continue writing, more thoughts accumulate. By then you are writing about something you did not imagine when you began. Despite the previous argument, there are many reasons to prove such discipline can help.

After this assignment I learned the importance of the drafting system. After my paper was graded I received it back and noticed multiple mistakes. This was the first step I practiced improving. Writing multiple drafts helped me analysis the material I wrote from another point of view. For example, I was able to eliminate sections that were unrelated from the main point. Building my vocabulary up another step I had focus as a writer and thinker. I used a combination between the dictionary and thesaurus to help me increase my vocabulary. One of my biggest challenges was accepting the fact that I had numerous habits that I developed in high school which were restricting my creativity. After reading Revising Attitudes by Brock Dethier, I now know that your first draft isn’t meant to be perfect. While writing drafts you need to let it go and not try to perfect anything. A rough draft is called rough for a reason. As a perfectionist, it was hard for me to comprehend the fact that I need to let go. Initially, a writer should do an outline before starting any essay. An outline can help to organize his or her main points in order to build an introduction, body and conclusion. This method of pre writing was something that I had never been exposed to prior to receiving an example outline from Professor Vilceus. By studying the example, I went from zero knowledge about an outline to creating ones that made arranging essay material uncomplicated.
Unit 10 was a closure for the previous four units in the process of inventing Canada. This unit based on the earliest resources on Canadian history and on the first nations whom lived in this country. This resources were about pre-Cartier and his explorations. Looking into the first week of AHIST 1401, I recognize this may be the most difficult class I have studied at the university. The syllabus schedule appears to be filled with volumes of reading material, written assignments, peer reviews, and quizzes that our class will be challenged with. The first day of class I wasn’t confident in my writing especially writing analytical essays. On the first day we rated our writing attitude on a scale of 1-5 and in the beginning of the semester mine was a 3. Now after taking this class, looking back as my essays I rate myself a 4 on scale. Activities that I found that supported my growth as a writer was connecting the Big Ideas to my essay as well as making connections to other experiences. Also what made me grow as a writer was the fact that when we did essays in class and on our own we started from the middle rather than starting with the introduction and not knowing where to start. This helped with writing our character analysis in Unit 2 The Ron Clark Story.
“Just follow the rubric and you will do very well during your high school English experience each,” teacher stated. Teachers handed out a rubric at the beginning of each assignment, which detail every single thing that needed to be included in your paper. As long and you followed all of the instruction stated in the rubric, your paper would qualify you to receive an A. At the time, I thought this method was rather effective. I thought I was a stronger writer as result of being able to follow the instruction from the rubric and always receiving an A on each assignment. I never received anything lower than a 93% in any of my high school English classes. Therefore, I transitioned from high school English to college English with the idea
One skill I greatly improved upon was my ability to gather and organize information. On my first paper, Arguing a Position (AaP), I did very poorly on this. The paper was arguing that the mass surveillance by the United States government had gone too far and was suppressing individuals’ freedoms. I spent a long time researching for this essay. When I went to sort through it all I had found that I had gathered way too much information and I had not organized it in any useful way. This put me behind the rest of the class in the writing process. I was still typing down to the very last day, while everyone else was editing, which hurt the quality of my essay. I did, however, learn from these mistakes. In my second essay, Proposing a Solution (PaS), I proposed a solution to the algae problem in Western Lake Erie. I feel I did much better at researching for this paper. I collected less information and only kept the information that I knew would be useful in writing the essay. This saved time which allowed me to put more effort into the quality of the writing. For this reason my PaS essay was much better than my AaP. This improvement shows that I have improved enough to earn credit for this course.
A major area for development and improvement revolves around effective note taking and essay planning/writing. As a Higher Education student you will be required to plan and produce countless essays in relation to the course you are studying, and a key point of reference to help with this would come from “The Guide to Learning and Study Skills for Higher Education and at Work” who give the following advice and tips: ‘Identify the purpose of the essay and who the audience (reader) is and what is required for both – structure your work and develop your arguments/main points – proof read your work and improve language, spelling, punctuation, grammar and style – review what you did and use feedback to improve your essay writing for the future’ (Bingham, R. and Drew, S. 2012 The guide to learning and study skills: For higher Education and at work).
