There are many types of conflict present in Holes, for of which are: Man versus man, Man versus Self, Man versus Society and Man versus Nature. These four examples of conflict help the characters and plot develop their resolutions to help the reader to understand what the book is about and on a different level and a different way. The first conflict the reader see in Holes is Man versus man. This conflict is mainly between Kate Barlow and the sheriff. For example, when Kate Barlow kills the sheriff for not helping her with Sam. When Trout Walker is planning to kill sam and burn down the schoolhouse. “Three days after Sam's death, miss Katherine shot the sheriff while he was sitting in his chair drinking a cup of coffee then she carefully applied a fresh coat of red lipstick and give him the kiss he had asked for”(115). It is significant that after she kills the sheriff she gives him a kiss. The conflict is resolved when she kills the sheriff. The reader is able to see that it was unfair that they had killed Sam and burned the schoolhouse down. …show more content…

The conflict is resolved then Stanley gets out of this hole and spit in it but if he were not to get out of his hole he would have to have someone else help him or been stuck in there until someone came to see if you was okay. Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces. There can be multiple conflicts in a story. This is the case in Of Mice and Men. In chapters three and four, there are man vs. man, man vs. self, and man vs. society conflicts. As George and Lennie interact with the workers on the ranch, sometimes conflicts arise between them.

In the Film Holes different filmic conventions are used to portray characters and construct atmosphere. The film is about a young boy named Stanley Yelnats who follows a journey like his great great great grandfather did. He was sent to Camp Green Lakes for a crime that he did not commit and when he arrived at camp he uncovered some of his family secrets. Techniques such as camera angles, sound effects and color constructs the characters and atmosphere in the film which creates the mood. These film codes are very important in the film as they help the viewer understand the story and conventions better.
Conflict is a key aspect in all pieces of literature. Without it, works would be very boring, predictable and would not be able to draw the reader in. There is usually one main conflict the protagonist faces, whether it is against an evil villain or the evil inside their own self. In the book The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, the courageous protagonist, Lily, struggles with an internal conflict with the guilt of possibly being the cause of her mother's death and the absence of knowledge about her mother. Following a clue left by her mother, Lily runs away from home and meets the "calendar sisters" in Tiburon, SC. There, she is finally able to discover who her mother actually was and learn the truth behind her mother's death: that Lily had accidentally shot her. Upon uncovering the whole truth, Lily is finally able to begin to forgive herself and shrug off the heavy guilt that had burdened her for years. Through Lily's struggle to figure out who her mother was and accept what happened to her, Sue Monk Kidd wishes to communicate that even if something
One of the first conflicts in the film causes a bigger conflict in later years and later in the plot between the same characters. A conflict is defined as "Conflict is a fact of human life. It occurs naturally in all kinds of settings. Nations still struggle, families fracture in destructive conflicts, marriages face challenges and often fail, and the workplace is plagued with stress." in the textbook "Interpersonal Conflict" by Wilmot. Meriam-Webster defines conflict in three ways. Firstly a war, fight or battle. Secondly "competitive or opposing action of incompatibles :antagonistic state or action (as of divergent ideas, interests, or persons)" or "mental struggle resulting from incompatible or opposing needs, drives, wishes, or external or internal demands". Lastly "the opposition of persons or forces that gives rise to the

There are different types of conflict, the conflict such as Man .vs. Nature, Man.vs. Man, and Person .vs. Self these types of conflicts show the struggle people have to go succeed a goal, dream or just to survive. In the poem “Ode to a Mouse” by Robert Burns and the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, both authors use the literary element, Conflict to show the struggles of the characters.
In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, there are several external and internal conflicts. The most common conflict throughout the book is character versus character. For example, when Scout finally entered the first grade her teacher, Miss Caroline, is not happy with Scout because she already knew how to read which created a battle between Scout and Miss Caroline’s opinions. Scout also had a spark of conflict with Atticus when she demanded that she will not attend school anymore because of Miss Caroline; Atticus disagreed. Character versus nature is another external conflict demonstrated in the novel. For example, Miss Maudie is conflicted with fire as exemplified when the narrator says, “We stood watching the street fill with men and cars while
The main character's name is Stanley Yelnats. At first, you see stanley as an alright kid who has made a bad decision stealing. “ I stole some sneakers” (pg 22). He also stands up for himself and his fellow friends. He used to be very careful before he spoke because he did not wanted to create trouble. “I’m not looking for trouble,” Stanley said. “I’m just tired that’s all.” (page 44), “He nervously went towards her. “Mr. Pendanski and I have been having a discussion. Have you taken a drink since Mr. Pendanski last filled your canteen?” Stanley didn’t want to cause trouble for Mr Pendanski. “I still got plenty left.” he said. “Excuse me.” He stopped. “Yeah, I drank some.” “Thank you. May I see your canteen please.” (page 67). As it mentions in the novel clearly that he was not looking for any trouble and that he did not want to cause any trouble for anyone because at that time he did not know how to stand up for yourself and continue growing. But later on, he gets to know everyone a little better. So he decided to show everyone the real him. “He went over to his hole, and to his surprise it was nearly finished. He stared at it, amazed. It didn’t make sense. Or perhaps it did. He smiled. Since he had taken the blame for the sunflower seeds, he realized the other boys had dug his hole for him. (page 94) “I’m teaching him to read and write.” said Stanley. “It’s sort of a trade. The hole still gets dug, so what does it matter who digs it.” “Excuse me?” said the Warden. “Isn’t it more important for him to learn to read” asked Stanley. “Doesn’t
Conflict can be a disagreement or an argument between individuals or communities, for example different ideas or interests can result in conflict. Conflict can be used to describe physical combat or verbal opposition between people. To Kill A Mockingbird is set in 1930s South America; this was the time of the Great Depression after the American Stock Market collapsed in 1929. Times were hard and there is a lot of poverty in the novel, even the Finches are not wealthy. Harper Lee presents conflict in the novel through many different aspects; one of these ways is how prejudiced the white communities are towards the black communities. A factor contributing to people’s
Each story ever written has many literary elements within it. Elements such as setting, characters, resolution, plot, and lastly conflict, Conflict is a major part of any story. The plot is centered around any sort of conflict in a short story or novel. It creates challenges with the story and within the characters. It keeps a reader entertained enough to see if the characters overcome those hardships. James Baldwin’s story, “Sonny’s Blues”, uses conflict as the main concept of the story, the conflicts and struggles wither make or break the characters in the story.
Conflicts play a crucial role in novels. Without conflict, novels would be uninteresting and very dull. Conflicts are seen in many different forms, as internal conflicts, when a character must deal with private problems, and external conflicts, when a character must deal with problems originating from an external source, like another person or society in general. Some common conflicts seen in other novels are person versus society, as in The Scarlet Letter when Hester is forced to face her mistake of adultery due to the obsession of the unforgiving town. An example of an internal conflict is present within Animal Dreams, when Cody must decide where she belongs and
All three of these conflicts help explain why certain characters in this novel act the way they do around others. The conflict provided by Stevenson is also used to assist with setting up the theme of the book.
