The short story “Good Country People” wrote by Flannery O’Connor is a story that shows many underlining themes about the people around us. One of the many underlying themes is that it shows that people are not always who they say they are, we see this when Hulga/Joy meets the Bible salesman, Manley Pointer. Also, people should not judge others by their looks, we see this when Hulga and Mrs. Hopewell think they are superior over everyone else. Throughout the story, Flannery O’Connor uses his description of characters, dialogue, and the use of the reality he created to show the underlying theme of the story.

“Good Country People,” is a classic example of the use of irony as a technique for imbuing a story with meaning. Irony works on many different levels through the piece. Examples of this range from O’ Connors use of clearly ironic dialogue to the dramatic irony that unfolds between Manley and Joy-Hulga. Flannery O’Connor, undoubtedly one of the most well-read authors of the early 20th Century, had many strong themes deeply embedded within all her writings. Two of her most prominent and poignant themes were Christianity and racism. By analyzing, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and “Everything that Rises Must Converge,” these two themes jump out at the reader. Growing up in the mid-1920’s in Georgia was a huge influence on O’Connor. Less than a decade before her birth, Georgia was much different than it was at her birth. Slaves labored tirelessly on their master’s plantations and were indeed a facet of everyday life. However, as the Civil War ended and Reconstruction began, slaves were not easily assimilated into Southern culture. Thus, O’Connor grew up in a highly racist area that mourned the fact that slaves were now to be treated as “equals.” In her everyday life in Georgia, O’Connor encountered countless citizens who were not shy in expressing their discontent toward the black race. This indeed was a guiding influence and inspiration in her fiction writing. The other guiding influence in her life that became a major theme in her writing was religion. Flannery O 'Connor was born in Savannah, Georgia, the only child of a Catholic family. The region was part of the 'Christ-haunted ' Bible belt of the Southern States. To the uninitiated, the writing of Flannery O'Connor can seem at once cold and dispassionate, as well as almost absurdly stark and violent. Her short stories routinely end in horrendous, freak fatalities or, at the very least, a character's emotional devastation. Working his way through "Greenleaf," "Everything that Rises Must Converge," or "A Good Man is Hard to Find," the new reader feels an existential hollowness reminiscent of Camus' The Stranger; O'Connor's imagination appears a barren, godless plane of meaninglessness, punctuated by pockets of random, mindless cruelty.

Many literary authors use different characters to represent the way people in a given period acted or behaved towards each other. An author such as Flannery O’Connor has used various characters in her short stories for various reasons. However, one factor evident in the texts is that she has portrayed them in the most negative way. Therefore, this paper is an analysis of how O’Connor’s stories A Good Man Is Hard to Find, Good Country People, and Everything That Rises Must Converge portray the downfall of major characters in them.

Flannery O’Connor’s view to the character rewards her view to human as a fallen creature. This is denoted by the fact that the story depicts a destruction of a normal family by three escaped killers all at once.

Flannery O'Connor is a blunt, cruel writer who uses violence to teach theology. O'Connor's works focus on grace through violent, cruel acts. In her stories' it's hard to find a happy person or a loving family. Her characters, Mrs. May "Greenleaf", the Grandmother "A Good Man is Hard to Find", and Hulga "Good Country People" all make terrible mistakes that result in finding grace through a tragedy. O'Connor does not pull punches, but lets her characters suffer the consequences of their actions. The only reward they receive is the knowledge of God's grace through these acts, but tragically this knowledge comes too late.

This project is related to what we are doing in this course because Flannery O’Connor the author of Good Country People is one of the stories that we had to read in this class. I propose to write the ending of Good Country People and make it a horror story like no other one that you have ever read. You will be captivated by the characters and sitting on the edge of your seats. The ending to this story will be one that even Stephen King himself would not think up. This story has all the elements of being a good horror story passion, jealousy, mistrust, suspicion, and resentment, does Hulga have a wooden leg or have she been pretending all along, is Mrs. Hopewell really her mother or is she a twin that kill her and took her place, is Mrs. Freeman
