Learning for life is a life outlook where someone decides to seek personal improvement opportunities throughout their entire lifespan. There is always some area of knowledge or technology where additional or new information can be beneficial. Through the use of distance learning, conference attendance, and traditional classroom attendance, the learner can enjoy employment benefits, more pay and even physical benefits making living easier. Becoming a life-long learner can be an experience that improves nearly every aspect of life.

Lifelong learning is “continuous development and improvement of knowledge and skills needed for employment and personal fulfilment” through formal and informal learning opportunities (Lifelong learning, 2016, ¶ 1). Formal learning is learning gained from institutions, educators, colleges/universities. I have had formal learning since pre-school till now and it has shaped me into the person, the future nurse I plan to be. A range of different and useful topics have been discussed since the start of Pathways to lifelong learning, some of which I found to be of particular help. The college expectations which we learned towards the beginning of the course was especially helpful to learning how to become a critical thinker, something that was not very touched upon throughout my time in high school. I now use Bloom’s Taxonomy when beginning to prepare for an important paper or presentation. In addition to the first chapter, I had also found great help in the second chapter on the skills needed to succeed in school. In the past, I used rehearsal as my main strategy to memorize for any upcoming tests or exams, however that often resulted in either retrieval failure or ineffective encoding. I now use chunking and elaboration as my main strategies to studying as I find it most effective when studying and retrieving information, especially when I am needing to memorize and learn a big amount of material.

This personal essay outlines key plans for my personal and professional development and success in the future. It shows how I will achieve these goals through continuous learning even after I have graduated. Furthermore, it tries to help the reader understand the need for lifelong learning. It is hoped that this paper will help change the perception of many about the learning process done only within certain periods of their life time.

‘Strategies for Lifelong Learning’ has been unexpectedly and therapeutically revealing. Throughout our correspondence we’ve shared personal, and professional challenges, and wins. In doing so, I’ve come to realize strengths and areas for improvement, which is why I chose to discuss the second habit from the 7 Habits of Highly Successful People, titled; ‘Begin With the End in Mind’.
