Muhammad Ali Accomplishments

At age 22 in 1964 , he won the wba and the wbc and lineal heavyweight titles from Sonny Liston. Clay then converted to Islam and changed his name from Cassius Clay, which he called his slave name, to Muhammad Ali. He set an example of racial pride for African Americans and resistance to white domination during the Civil Rights Movement.

He would help give food to those who were hungry. It is said that Muhammad fed more than 22 million people who were starving across the world. On October 29, 1960 Cassius Clay made his a professional debut with a six round unanimous decision over Tunney Hunsaker. Cassius made all arrangements for the fight and he even trained himself. After having trouble with a less talented Hunsaker, Ali decided to hire a trainer. He went through many trainers until he found Angelo Dundee. Clay won his first world heavyweight championship on February 25, 1964. He beat Sonny Liston in six rounds. Liston refused to leave his corner for the seventh round. Almost directly after the fight, Clay told the world that he was now to be called Cassius X because of his affiliation with Islam. A month later he announced his name was to be Muhammad Ali which was the title given to him by the head of the Black Muslims, Elijah Muhammad. When Cassius returned to America, he returned to a country that was having serious racial problems between whites and blacks that were dividing the country. Cassius began looking into the religious philosophy of the nation of Islam. The nation of Islam is an African American form of the Islamic religion and studies the Quran. Cassius continued boxing as a professional boxer and he was looking to become the heavyweight champion of the world, and in February of 1964 he beat Sonny Liston to become the heavyweight champion. Soon after the heavyweight championship match, Cassius Marcellus Clay formally changed his name to Muhammad Ali.

Clay however, wasn’t worried about his successes as much as he was worried about segregation. This supports why Muhammad Ali is such a big part of the “American Dream” and the end of segregation. To many, Clay was seen as an arrogant, mouthy, thug. He was even given the nickname “Louisville Lip” (“Muhammad Ali”). However Ali focused on the entire African American race’s success, not just his own.

When his career finally came to an end he had a total of fifty-five wins and only lost two fights. He also earned the heavyweight title back when he resumed from his suspension. After being on a roll with his knock outs he was interfered with a loss by Leon Spinks when he got knocked out. On June 27th, he then announced that he was retiring. Then in 1979 Ali was stripped of how he was known to the world. Instead of deciding to continue to fight - like when he did when Joe Frazier knocked him out then won during their rematch. From society’s point of view it seems as though he just gave up on his career after that knock out when Spinks took his title.
