With the expansion of medicine being apparent in today’s society and seeing how far medicine has evolved from the old wives tales of chicken soup curing a cold, to the modern day brain surgery. Medicine has progressed so far that we can pre-empt the attack; this is evident in the nationwide campaign to ‘Act F.A.S.T’. This was a commercial used to recognise the symptoms of a stroke so a rapid response can be provided to help minimise the damage caused by strokes. However with strokes still being the “third leading cause of death in England each year and the leading cause of disability” it still affects the majority of the population; may it be through family or friends. Due to the severe debilitating effects of a stroke many people develop disabilities so are not able to return to their prior self. As a result they are also provided with new skills that will be needed to overcome the challenges the patient will face. So the analysis conducted on the methods of rehabilitation will not be based solely on the restoration of previous functions but on how the treatments aid an individual to become physically and psychologically comfortable.

Aetiology
A stroke is a disturbance in the blood supply to the brain resulting in a stroke which can also be described as a brain attack. As the brain controls the many of functions of the body the loss of blood supply can result in neurological signs and symptoms which last for 24 hours or lead to death. For example a stroke occurring in the right hemisphere of the brain would affect the left side of the body. A stroke is often referred to as Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) which is the medical name for a stroke and also as an infarction where an obstruction has led to the stopping of the blood supply thus resulting in tissue death.
