The Importance of Integrity Essay

I came to know that academic integrity is a major thing that depends on few values like honesty and responsibility of our work. We need to make sure everything what we are doing or writing is in our own.

Today, the word integrity is a very important word. Integrity can mean different things to different people. Some people might think integrity means truthfulness, or possibly being fair. Integrity means to me, an honorable person, someone who is honest, and someone who tells the truth. Having integrity is an admirable person, being true to yourself, and is a trait that everyone should have, or strive to achieve.

I believe that someone possesses integrity if they act in accordance with the ethical standards they hold true. Every individual has their own standard of ethics or core principles that guide their actions, and integrity encompasses those principles. When someone abides by the principles they believe to be ethical, they are acting with integrity. According to The Federation of European Accountants, individuals should follow their own core principles and their company’s ethical standards as well. The combination of these principles “form a framework for behaving with integrity” (Federation of European Accountants, 2009, p. 7). It is a choice to hold oneself to ethical standards, and choosing to live by those standards is acting with integrity.

Integrity is when you do the right thing, even when nobody's watching. “You working with a group cutting bushes in the woods when two of the men started to argue Joe looked up and saw the guy slapping angrily toward each other both raising their axes, and without thinking Joe jumped between the men ‘you give me your axe’ he demanded of one, then he turned to the other ‘and you give me your axe’. Joe took the axes and the fight was over.” (131) Joe showed integrity in that situation because he did the right thing, even if it meant potentially putting himself in danger, even when no one was watching.

The word “ integrity” seems to float around me, its very existence locked in my mind. The word integrity will never be forgotten, never be lost, but the meaning behind the word integrity has yet to be discovered. Oprah Winfrey once said “Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody's going to know whether you did it or not. ” Integrity is something I believe in and value greatly. To me integrity is doing the right thing even when no one else is watching. Most people always look for an easy choice, but it's not about the easy choice it's about the right choice.

Nowadays, the word ‘integrity’ is continually utilized to clarify the character in the literature. Integrity by the definition in the Cambridge dictionary is: “the quality of being honest”. As the dictionary indicates, usually, a lot of people utilize integrity as a synonym for the honesty, but in my opinion, the word integrity implies much more than fair being honest. American media proprietor Oprah Winfrey said: Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody's going to know whether you did it or not. Hence, having integrity means doing the right thing in a reliable way by following own moral or ethical convictions in all circumstances, indeed in the event that no one is watching. Integrity is a noun meaning the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. We see less and less of this quality being used in our society today. The students at the high school in Piper, Kansas have all greatly abused this quality. The teachers and the school board have also taken this problem and made it a bigger situation. There are far more ways of handling this situation than failing the 28 sophomores at the Piper High School. First, the school board could have taken a different approach to the problem. Second, the parents should have been more worried about their child cheating rather than them failing. Just two simple approaches could make the situation better.

The word integrity evolved from the Latin root "Integer" which means "whole. It embodies tenacity, to follow through and do the things you committed to in order to be whole. Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. Someone who has integrity means they are true to themselves and would do nothing to demean or dishonor themselves. Integrity is something that needs to be personally determined because nobody should have an effect on the integrity of someone else. This means that no matter what the circumstances are, do the right thing. Integrity is found everywhere like: Integrity in the workplace, Academic Integrity, and Election Integrity which are all types of integrity that people see every day.

Integrity is never compromising moral beliefs. When a person has integrity they will not be persuaded by others to do things they find to be immoral. A person that has integrity displays good character and shows sincerity in their actions. Integrity is having the courage to do the right thing even in the face of controversy or conflict. People are not considered to immediately have integrity because they display moral decision making on one or two occasions but will establish their integrity over time and after a lot of sound, moral decisions and behaviors. When people make poor ethical decisions it damages their level of integrity.

Integrity is a quality that many companies often desire, which includes but is not limited to a commitment from their workers to be honest, despite all the financial hard times caused by the recession of 2008. Integrity requires individuals to act on a standard based on a conviction that there is always a right way to act when faced with an ethical dilemma. Integrity involves being honest and committing to the right action even when put to the test in a compromising situation. A person of integrity will act out of moral standard and will always do the right thing regardless if it means the loss of a job or losing a great client. The quality of integrity means that the individual does not hide material and important information. Furthermore, this person believes that having high ethical and moral standards is first priority while keeping the job or advancing in the workplace is secondary. Additionally, people who have integrity cannot be pressured to be dishonest and abandon their moral standards. Individuals who commit to the quality of integrity are trustworthy and reliable because they cannot be bribed or influenced into practicing dishonesty.

Integrity has a plethora of different meanings, everyone has a different opinion. To me integrity means being able to take what ever life throws at you and keep going. Integrity and toughness are closely related, the definition of toughness is being able to withstand the force that is opposing you. I think that people who have integrity have a strong work ethic. Even though i have this personal opinion of what the word integrity means, it means something completely different in the business world. Integrity means doing the right thing when no one is looking, a company needs honesty. Integrity is a word that holds deep meaning to anybody who says it, and also has sentimental value in most peoples lives.
