José Cadalso (1741–1782)
Cadahalso or Cadalso, Don José de (kä-dä-äl’sō or kä-däl’sō). A Spanish poet, dramatist, and story-writer; born in Cadiz, Oct. 8, 1741; killed at Gibraltar, Feb. 27, 1782. Military and literary capacity were equally characteristic of this well-born and well-educated man, who, after writing elegant verses, dainty satires, and especially ‘The Sages of the Violet’ (or ‘Learned Men who are Fashionable’), a specimen of original and unforced humor, was killed during a siege by the explosion of a shell.
