Robert Calef (1648–1719)

Calef, Robert (kā’lef). An American satirist; born in Massachusetts, about 1648; died in 1719. He was a Boston merchant. He wrote: ‘More Wonders of the Invisible World’ (1700), a reply to Cotton Mather’s ‘Wonders of the Invisible World,’ and opposing persecution for witchcraft. The book was publicly burned by Increase Mather.
