Charles Stuart Calverley (1831–1884)
Calverley, Charles Stuart. An English poet and humorist; born at Martley, Worcestershire, Dec. 22, 1831; died on Feb. 17, 1884. He won a prize at Oxford with a Latin poem; afterward becoming a member of Cambridge, he was there made Fellow. He possessed an exquisite wit. His ‘Verses and Translations’ (1862) have been often reprinted; ‘Theocritus’ (1869); ‘Fly Leaves’ (1872); ‘Literary Remains’ (1885). (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
