Frantisek Ladislav Čelakovský (1799–1852)
Čelakovský, Frantisek Ladislav (chel’ä-kōv”skē). A Czech poet and philologist; born in Strakonitz, March 7, 1799; died in Prague, Aug. 5, 1852. His earlier work was journalistic and pedagogical, his reputation in poetry dating from the appearance of ‘Slav Folk Songs’ (1822), to which succeeded: ‘Echo of Russian Folk Songs’ (1829); ‘Echo of Bohemian Folk Songs’ (1840); etc. He translated Herder and Scott into Bohemian.
