José Martinião de Alencar (1829–1877)

Alencar, José Martinião de (ä-len-kär’). A noted Brazilian lawyer, politician and novelist; born at Fortaleza, May 1, 1829; died in Rio de Janeiro, Dec. 12, 1877. His novels in the style of Cooper treat subjects from Brazilian history, and city and country life, chiefly based on Indian traditions, and contain masterly descriptions of tropical nature.
