Jeremy Collier (1650–1726)

Collier, Jeremy. A famous English theologian and non-conforming bishop; born at Stow, England, in 1650; died in 1726. He suffered persecution for his zeal in the expression of his opinions. In 1698 he published his celebrated work, ‘A Short View of the Profaneness and Immorality of the English Stage,’ which created a great sensation in the literary world and resulted in a reform of the English drama. Among his other works are ‘Essays’ on moral subjects.
