Cynewulf
Cynewulf. An accomplished Anglo-Saxon poet, presumably an ecclesiastic, of the eighth century. His name is acrostically wrought into the poems ‘Juliana,’ ‘Christ,’ ‘Elene,’ and ‘Fates of the Apostles.’ Many other anonymous Anglo-Saxon poems have been ascribed to him by modern scholars, on very inadequate grounds. That he was Bishop Cynewulf of Lindisfarne is the most plausible of the guesses at his identity.
