Madeleine Vinton Dahlgren (1825–1898)

Dahlgren, Madeleine Vinton (däl’gren). An American prose-writer and poet, wife of Admiral Dahlgren; born in Gallipolis, OH, about 1825; died at Washington, May 28, 1898. Her works include: ‘Idealities’ (1859); ‘South Sea Sketches’ (1881); ‘Etiquette of Social Life in Washington’ (1881); ‘Memoirs of John A. Dahlgren’ (1882); ‘The Lost Name’; and ‘Lights and Shadows of a Life’ (1886). For her Spanish translation of Donoso Cortes’s ‘Catholicism, Liberalism, and Socialism,’ she received the thanks of Pius IX.
