Rufus Dawes (1803–1859)
Dawes, Rufus. An American poet; born in Boston, Jan. 26, 1803; died in Washington, DC, Nov. 30, 1859. He wrote: ‘The Valley of the Nashaway, and Other Poems’ (1830); ‘Geraldine’ (1839), resembling Don Juan in form and treatment; the successful romance ‘Nix’s Mate’ (1840). His verses were sung at the laying of the corner-stone of Bunker Hill monument.
