Joseph Rodman Drake (1795–1820)
Drake, Joseph Rodman. An American poet; born at New York, Aug. 7, 1795; died on Sept. 21, 1820. The poems for which he is gratefully remembered are ‘The Culprit Fay’ (1819) and ‘The American Flag’ (1819). He wrote also some shorter pieces, notably a poem: ‘Abelard to Heloïse.’ With Fitz-Greene Halleck, under the signature “The Croakers,” he published in a New York journal in 1819 a series of short lyrics, mostly of a humorous kind, on the political affairs of the time.
