William Drummond of Hawthornden (1585–1649)

Drummond, William, of Hawthornden. A Scotch poet; born at Hawthornden near Edinburgh, Dec. 13, 1585; died on Dec. 4, 1649. His principal works are: ‘Tears on the Death of Mœliades’ (1613), Mœliades being Prince Henry, son of James I.; ‘Poems Amorous, Funerall, Divine, Pastorall, in Sonnets, Songs, Sextains, Madrigals’ (1616); ‘Forth Feasting’ (1617); ‘Flowers of Zion.’ After a visit from Ben Jonson, Drummond printed notes of their conversations; a very interesting chapter in literary history. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
