Józef Dzierzkowski (1807–1865)

Dzierzkowski, Józef (tsērts’kōf-skē). A Polish novelist (1807–65); born at Xaverov, Galicia, in 1807; died in Lemberg, Jan. 13, 1865. He loves to contrast the selfish dissipation of the upper classes with the humble virtues of the lowly. ‘Salon and Street’ (1847); ‘The Twins’ (1854); ‘The Jugglers’ (1855); ‘The Crown of Thorns’ (1856), are noteworthy; ‘Polish Chivalry’ (1858), a historical novel, is one of his best. He also wrote a drama, ‘The Spark of Poesy’ (1860).
