Jens Andreas Friis (1821–1896)

Friis, Jens Andreas (frēs). A Norwegian philologist, ethnologist, and sketch-writer; born in Sogndal, May 2, 1821; died on Feb. 16, 1896. He exhaustively investigated the language and literature of the Finns and Laps in a ‘Lap Grammar’ (1856), ‘Lap Mythology’ (1871), and like works. ‘Holidays among Crags and Mountains’ (1876)—hunting and fishing sketches, with the mountains of his country as a background—give another side of his literary power.
