Juan Nicasio Gallego (1777–1853)

Gallego, Juan Nicasio (gäl-yā’gō). A Spanish lyric poet; born in Zamora, Dec. 14, 1777; died at Madrid, Jan. 9, 1853. His first poetry was light and amorous, but he later took up sterner subjects. His ‘The Second of May,’ and an elegy upon the death of Queen Isabella (1818), have attained celebrity.
