William Lloyd Garrison (1805–1879)

Garrison, William Lloyd. The famous American abolitionist and journalist; born in Newburyport, MA, Dec. 10, 1805; died in New York City, May 24, 1879. He began life as a printer, became associate editor of the Genius of Universal Emancipation, Baltimore, and in 1831 founded the famous antislavery paper, the Liberator, in Boston. He was also the founder of the American Antislavery Society, and its president from 1843 to 1865. Among his works are: ‘Thoughts on African Colonization’ (1832); ‘Sonnets and Poems’ (1843).
