Antonio Gil y Zárate (1793–1861)

Gil y Zárate, Don Antonio (Hēl ē thä’rä-tā). A Spanish dramatist; born in the Escorial, Dec. 1, 1793; died at Madrid, Jan. 27, 1861. After a political career he turned to play-writing; and a tragedy, ‘Doña Blanca de Borbon,’ made his name widely known in 1832. His next efforts were less conventionally classical: ‘Carlos II., the Bewitched’; ‘Guzman the Good’; ‘Rosmunda’; and ‘Don Alvaro de Luna.’
