Gil y Zárate, Antonio (1796–1861)

Gil y Zárate, Antonio (thä-rä’tē). A Spanish dramatic poet; born at San Lorenzo de l’Escurial, Spain, 1796; died in 1861. He was professor of physics in Granada, and afterwards wrote drama: ‘Blanche of Bourbon’ (1835); ‘Guzman the Brave’; ‘The Czar Demetrius’; etc. He also published a much-esteemed history of Spanish literature.
