Johann Wilhelm von Archenholz (1743–1812)

Archenholz, Johann Wilhelm von (är’ċhen-hōlts). A German historian (1743–1812). He took part in the closing campaigns of the Seven Years’ War and retired as captain, 1763; traveled extensively in Europe, lived in England the greater part of 1769–79, and settled in Hamburg, in 1792. His book on ‘England and Italy’ (1785), extensively translated, obtained a phenomenal success. A sequel to it was ‘Annals of British History’ (1789–98, 20 vols.). His ‘History of the Seven Years’ War’ (1789, augmented 1793) is still the most popular account of that war.
