Vincenzo Gioberti (1801–1852)
Gioberti, Vincenzo (jō-ber’tē). An Italian philosopher and statesman; born in Turin, in April 1801; died in Paris, Oct. 1852. Losing favor with King Charles Albert, whose chaplain he was, he removed to Brussels, where he wrote: ‘The Theory of the Supernatural’ (1838); ‘Introduction to the Study of Philosophy’ (1839); ‘Civil and Moral Supremacy of the Italians’ (1843), in which he advocated the restoration or the unity of Italy; and ‘The Modern Jesuit’ (1847).
