Edmond (1822–1896) and Jules (1830–1870) de Goncourt

Goncourt, Edmond, and Jules de (gô-kör’). French novelists and miscellaneous prose-writers, brothers. Edmond was born in Nancy, May 26, 1822; died at Paris, July 16, 1896. Jules was born in Paris, Dec. 17, 1830; died near Paris, June 20, 1870. From childhood their personal intimacy was as close as their literary union subsequently became. The detailed account of them presented elsewhere makes it necessary to allude only to a work on ‘Art in the Eighteenth Century,’ many of the pictures in which are from the brush of Jules, who was a finished artist. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
