Thomas Gray (1716–1771)

Gray, Thomas. A great English poet; born at Cornhill, London, Dec. 26, 1716; died at Cambridge, July 24, 1771. He is known in every household for the ‘Elegy in a Country Church-Yard,’ published 1751, though begun seven years before. The ‘Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College’ (1747); ‘Ode to Adversity’; ‘Progress of Poetry’; and ‘The Bard’ (1757), are also famous. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
