Lafcadio Hearn (1850–1904)

Hearn, Lafcadio (hėrn). An American journalist and miscellaneous writer; born of an Irish father and a Greek mother, at Santa Maura, Ionian Islands, June 27, 1850; died at Tokyo, Sept. 26, 1904. He was educated in England and France, and later resided in this country and in Japan. He wrote: ‘Some Chinese Ghosts’ (1887), six stories exquisitely told; ‘Two Years in the French West Indies’ (1890); ‘Youma’ (1890), the story of a West-Indian slave; ‘Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan,’ and several other books on Japan, including ‘Kokovo; Hints and Echoes of Japanese Inner Life’; ‘Gleanings in Buddha Fields’; ‘Japan: an Attempt at Interpretation’ (1904); ‘The Romance of the Milky Way’ (1905).
