Herculano de Carvalho e Araújo, Alexandre (er-kö-lä’nō de kär-väl’yö e ä-rou’zhō). A Portuguese poet and scholar; born in Lisbon, March 28, 1810; died near Santarem, Sept. 12, 1877. He early distinguished himself as a political reformer, editor, and poet of reform. He also wrote valuable histories and historical novels. ‘The Prophet’s Voice’ is the best of his poems. ‘Eurico’ is a strongly original historical novel.
