Johann Gottfried Herder (1744–1803)
Herder, Johann Gottfried von (her’der). A German philosopher and historian of literature; born at Mohrungen, Aug. 25, 1744; died at Weimar, Dec. 18, 1803. He wrote: ‘Fragments on Recent German Literature’ (1767); ‘Voices of Nations in Song’ (1778), translations and imitations of popular songs from several European languages; ‘The Cid’; ‘Spirit of Hebrew Poetry’ (1872–83); ‘Ideas for a Philosophy of the History of Mankind’ (4 vols., 1784–91), his greatest work. His ‘Complete Works’ were published in 45 volumes, 1805–20. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
