Theodore Henry Hittell (1830–1917)

Hittell, Theodore Henry. An American lawyer and historian, brother of John Shertzer; born in Pennsylvania, 1830; died in 1917. His home was in San Francisco. Besides valuable legal works, including ‘General Laws of California 1850–64’ (1868), commonly known as ‘Hittell’s Digest,’ he published a critical review of ‘Goethe’s Faust’ (1872); the important ‘History of California’ (4 vols., 1885–97); ‘Review of Goethe’s Faust.’
