Christoph Ernst von Houwald (1778–1845)

Houwald, Christoph Ernst von (hö’väld). A German dramatic poet and story-writer; born at Straupitz, Nov. 29, 1778; died at Neuhaus, Jan. 28, 1845. He wrote fables and juvenile stories, but his literary reputation depends wholly upon his plays: ‘The Picture,’ ‘Curse and Benison,’ ‘The Prince and the Townsman,’ ‘The Enemies’; and others.
