Juan de Iriarte (1701–1771)

Iriarte, Juan de (ē-rē-är’tā). A Spanish scholar and writer; born at Orotava on the island of Teneriffe, in 1701; died at Madrid, 1771. He was chief librarian of the Royal Library; and his most important work was ‘Codices of the Greek MSS.’ (1769). He also wrote epigrams and proverbs in Latin and Spanish, and narrative poems in Latin, published in four volumes (1774).
