James Trecothick Austin (1784–1870)

Austin, James Trecothick. An American lawyer and biographer; born in Boston, Jan. 7, 1784; died there, May 8, 1870. He graduated from Harvard in 1802, and was attorney-general of Massachusetts from 1832 to 1843. He was a pronounced opponent of the abolition movement. He is the author of a ‘Life of Elbridge Gerry’ (1828).
